Daniel Juncadella joins HWA RACELAB as test and reserve driver

Daniel Juncadella will take on the role of test and reserve driver for HWA RACELAB during their first season in the ABB FIA Formel E Championship

  • Daniel already knows the team from the DTM where he achieved his maiden win with HWA
  • Daniel spent a day testing with the team during the official tests in Valencia
  • Daniel Juncadella: “Hopefully, I can help Gary, Stoffel and the engineers master the challenge in my new role”
  • Ulrich Fritz: “We’ve known Daniel for a very long time and know exactly how good his speed is and how helpful the engineers find his feedback from working together in the DTM”

New Gen2 car: Check. New driver pairing: Check. New test and reserve driver: Check. HWA RACELAB’s first season in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship is gradually taking shape. With Daniel Juncadella, the team now have their test and reserve driver for Season 5 of the electric race series.

Formula E is not completely new to Daniel. In mid-October, he completed a day’s testing for the team during official testing in Valencia. Earlier this year, he participated in a test for series rookies in Marrakech.

“I’m very grateful to the team for giving me the opportunity to continue our long-standing collaboration through Formula E,” said Daniel. “Formula E is a new adventure for all of us. The team have a steep learning curve in prospect and can use all the support they can get. Hopefully, I can help Gary, Stoffel and the engineers master the challenge in my new role. My first test with the new Gen2 car was a great experience. I found my feet in the team right away and can’t wait to see how we will fare on our Formula E debut. But before then, we still have plenty to do.”

Daniel already knows the team from his time in the DTM where he raced five seasons with the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport DTM Team from 2013 to 2018. Last season, Daniel and HWA secured three pole positions and two podiums, including his maiden DTM victory at the historic circuit in Brands Hatch.

Daniel also knows his way around single-seater racing cars, having won the prestigious Formula 3 Grand Prix in Macau in 2011 before joining the DTM. The following year, he clinched titles in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and in the Formula 3 Euro Series and also won the Formula 3 Masters at Zandvoort. Even back then, his engine was brimming with HWA and AMG technology. In recent years, the racing all-rounder has also gained experience of GT3 vehicles in a number of endurance race series.

“We’ve known Daniel for a very long time and know exactly how good his speed is and how helpful the engineers find his feedback,” said Ulrich Fritz, CEO of HWA AG. “Daniel has a wealth of experience in setting up a wide range of racing cars and is thus perfectly able to support us on the racetrack as well as in simulator work. It’s exactly these strengths that we need in our debut season in Formula E. At the same time, we know that we can also rely on him if he has to step in at short notice.”

Daniel’s support is timely, because there’s plenty to do at the Affalterbach factory at the moment. Preparations for the Diriyah season opener on 15 December are now in full swing following the team’s first official appearance in testing at Valencia.
