HWA RACELAB kicks off the Formula 2 and Formula 3 season with pre-season tests

The pre-season Formula 2 and Formula 3 tests in Sakhir/Bahrain (1st to 3rd March) herald a historic motorsport season for HWA AG. For the first time, the Affalterbach-based company will be represented by two private teams in the top two junior series in Formula racing. The Formula 2 team welcomes a strong partner on board, in BWT.

  • Official pre-season tests in the FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 championships begin on Sunday (1st March)
  • BWT supports HWA RACELAB as team sponsor in the 2020 Formula 2 season

Affalterbach, 28th February 2020 – The three-day tests at Bahrain International Circuit are the final dress rehearsal ahead of the joint Formula 2 and Formula 3 season-opener at the same venue from 20th to 22nd March.

Giuliano Alesi (France) and Artem Markelov (Russia) are the two drivers in the BWT HWA RACELAB team in Formula 2. This is 25-year-old Markelov’s fourth year in Formula 2. In 2017, he finished runner-up in the prestigious series. 20-year-old Alesi is entering his second season in Formula 2. His father Jean raced for the Mercedes-AMG factory team supported by HWA in the DTM from 2002 to 2005.

With BWT as team sponsor in the 2020 Formula 2 Championship, HWA RACELAB welcomes on board a strong partner with a wealth of motorsport experience. The cars will sport the familiar BWT livery on the track. The cooperation in Formula 2 sees HWA AG and BWT AG revive a partnership that began in the DTM in 2015.

For its second season in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, HWA RACELAB has bolstered its ranks with two highly-talented new additions. Jack Doohan (Australia) and Enzo Fittipaldi (Brazil) will line up alongside Jake Hughes (Great Britain), who claimed the team’s maiden Formula 3 victory last year. Jack Doohan is the son of five-time motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan. The 17-year-old has twice finished runner-up in the Asian F3 Championship. Enzo Fittipaldi is the grandson of two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi. Last year, the member of the Ferrari Driver Academy finished second in the Formula Regional European Championship.

Formula 2 and Formula 3 races feature on the support programme for the Formula 1 World Championship. While the Formula 2 calendar consists of twelve events in total, each featuring two races, the Formula 3 Championship is held over nine events.

Ulrich Fritz, CEO HWA AG
“We are hugely excited about the start of the season. This is the first time we will be fielding our own independent teams in both Formula 2 and Formula 3. That is something we are very proud of. On the other hand, it is also a big challenge for us. When it comes to the drivers, we have an ideal combination, with both teams including a very experienced drivers at this level, as well as highly-talented youngsters. I am confident that this is exactly the right combination to achieve success. We are also pleased that BWT AG will be supporting us as partner, as we take on our new challenge in Formula 2. BWT AG has proven emphatically in recent years that motorsport is dear to its heart. As a company, we also want to focus more on conserving valuable resources. The BWT AG water treatment systems in our factory buildings and at the racetrack will play an important role in our efforts – particularly through the elimination of long transport routes for water bottles. We cooperated successfully with BWT in the DTM, so the basis for a successful continuation of this partnership has already been laid.”

Lutz Hübner, COO BWT
“In recent years, we have added some colour to motorsport with our characteristic pink colour scheme, and have developed a very close relationship with our teams. We are committed to helping these teams achieve their goals. For this reason, we decided to support HWA in Formula 2 as a partner. This cooperation will make the BWT HWA RACELAB far more competitive in 2020. We will also help the team to become more sustainable. Together, we will reduce the use of single-use bottles at the circuit, minimise plastic waste, and facilitate the local treatment and consumption of drinking water.”
